The
100%-PKI Complaint Authentication Solution
Following recent security
breaches, the computer industry has discovered that
the traditional user-name/password method of authentication
is very risky. It’s primary weakness is that, when transmitted
over the Internet, a user-name and password is not protected
and can be easily stolen or revealed. This challenge,
however, can be overcome by the use of certificates
with Public Key Infrastructure; PKI provides the backbone
for a total information security solution. In PKI, each
party in an information transfer has separate keys for
encryption and decryption. That is, the sender will
use the receiver’s public key to encrypt the data, and
the receiver will have his own private key to decrypt
the data. In this system, the user’s private key signs
the data, and his identity is verifiable by his public
key. Since a private key doesn’t need to pass through
the Internet, this totally eliminates the possibility
that it could be sniffed. In this way, information privacy
and non-repudiation of disputed charges can be ensured.
